MEMBERSHIP QUESTIONS
+ WHAT IF I NEED CARE AFTER-HOURS OR ON WEEKENDS?
Our service is for primary care only. By definition, if a medical problem cannot safely wait until business hours, it is an emergency. We do not provide emergency care.
If you are having an emergency like chest pain, call 911 immediately, and then notify your doctor once you have been evaluated at the hospital.
Sometimes patients ask for routine care to be provided after-hours out of convenience or discomfort, for example, a child with an overnight earache. Ideally, your doctor would have prepared you for these foreseeable problems, and you would know how to effectively treat the symptoms until the office is open. You can even get online in middle of the night and schedule an appointment for the morning.
If you still need triage after-hours; that is available to practice MEMBERS ONLY. We are happy to help you in your time of need.
However, we do ask that you understand that doctors are not robots and need to have some time off work and rest. We strive to live out the work-life balance advice that we give to our patients. Please reserve after-hours calls for truly urgent matters, never for refills or appointment requests.
If you can anticipate needing to see or talk with the doctor, please do-so during regular service hours. We are extremely accessible during regular hours. If you must contact the doctor after-hours, there is a small on-call surcharge of $50. In-person care is not offered after-hours.
+ HOW DO I REFILL MY PRESCRIPTIONS?
Our doctors are very deliberate in prescribing enough medicine to last as long as is safe before you need to be rechecked again. If you have no refills remaining at your pharmacy, it means you are due for laboratory studies or a repeat evaluation. Always contact your pharmacy first to check for existing refills.
Please schedule an appointment before you run out of chronic medications. Refill requests should be made via the portal My Medications list. There is a Refill button next to each medication. Urgent requests for medication renewals made outside of business hours will incur the on-call fee.
+ HOW DO I SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT?
Appointments are self-scheduled online. This modern convenience saves you time and makes it easier to make or change an appointment. If you are in need of an office, phone or video appointment, simply schedule it online. No need to wait for the office to open, and no waiting on hold for a secretary.
Need to change your appointment? You can do that directly from the confirmation email you received at the time of booking.
To make sure the doctor is free to talk to you, please schedule a phone appointment whenever possible. Unscheduled calls will typically go to voicemail since the doctor is likely with another patient.
+ WHAT DOES THE MEMBERSHIP FEE COVER?
The fee covers excellent primary care through in-person or telemedicine visits, annual wellness exams, well-child exams, sports physicals, school physicals, basic procedures, treatment of acute illness or minor injuries and chronic condition management.
Our patients will also have access to discounted labs and special procedures not included in the membership fees.
+ ARE NON-MEMBERS ELIGIBLE FOR APPOINTMENTS AND PROCEDURES?
Yes. Non-members can schedule appointments for consultations, with the exception of annual physicals--those should be with your PCP. Non-members pay higher prices than monthly members on all services and procedures. For a complete list of non-member prices SEE FEE FOR SERVICE PRICING LIST.
+ IS THERE A SIGNUP FEE TO JOIN?
There is an enrollment fee that varies by plan. See PLANS & PRICING.
+ CAN I TRY OUT THE SERVICE BEFORE SIGNING UP?
Yes. You can always reserve individual consultations at the non-member rates. If you decide to join within 30 days, your most recent visit payment can be applied toward your first month’s membership fee.
+ DOES MODERN MOBILE MEDICINE SEE PATIENTS OF ALL AGES?
Yes, MODERN Mobile Medicine provides care for patients of all ages. Dr. Haden is a Family Medicine specialist. Our house call model is particularly well suited for families with children to maximize convenience.
+ WHAT IF I DECIDE TO CANCEL?
The deeply discounted care and added benefits for members are based on a 12 month cycle of membership. However, we understand that things come up, people move etc. We will allow you to terminate your membership with 30 days written notice, but you then forefeit the member discounts that were provided. If you choose to re-apply at a later date, you must pay the registration fee again.
If the value of the services you received over the term of the membership exceeds the amount you paid in membership fees, you will be charged an amount equal to the difference. The value of the services is equal to MODERN Mobile Medicine’s usual and customary fee-for-service charges (non-member prices).
If you do not feel comfortable with a 12 month commitment to the doctor-patient relationship, then it is best that you not start a membership.
General Questions
+ WHAT IS DIRECT PRIMARY CARE?
Under the Direct Primary Care (DPC) model, the patient (you) receives comprehensive primary health care directly from their DPC physician. The patient pays for this care through a monthly fee, paid directly to MODERN Mobile Medicine.
Because DPC practices do not participate in any insurance or plans, the providers are able to avoid the ever-increasing and costly documentation demands and administrative intrusions that come with accepting insurance. DPC practices also avoid the onerous patient data collection responsibilities which many plans impose. These require staff, time, and money, often amounting to substantial intrusions on patient privacy.
Because DPC physicians avoid these obligations to insurance companies, they are free to spend that time listening to and treating patients. And because DPC physicians eliminate the significant overhead costs of participating in insurance, they can pass the savings on to you, the patient – and give compassionate, attentive and timely care at an affordable cost.
+ WHAT ARE YOUR PRICES?
Please find a complete list of our prices here. We do not take any insurance plans.
+ DO YOU SEE NURSING HOME PATIENTS?

+ WHAT IF I'M HOSPITALIZED?
If a patient is hospitalized, we will help coordinate their care with the hospitalist service, but we do not provide inpatient care.
+ DO YOU PRESCRIBE OPIATES OR NARCOTICS?
Chronic pain management has become a separate medical specialty, and we advise patients with chronic pain to see a Pain Management specialist for state of the art treatment and non-narcotic therapy. Other services like physical therapy, massage therapy and psychotherapy are extremely helpful to help with coping with pain syndromes as well.
Unfortunately, every year thousands of patients die of accidental overdoses from pain medications like oxycodone and hydrocodone. Many other everyday people become dependent or addicted to them, in the growing opioid epidemic that is destroying lives. In addition, the amount of regulation, red tape, and DEA scrutiny of doctors prescribing opiates continues to grow. For these reasons, we avoid prescribing narcotics in general and do not manage chronic opioid use.
+ WHAT IF I NEED MEDICAL ATTENTION WHILE I'M AWAY FROM HOME?
In the age of telemedicine, many conditions can be diagnosed and treated via a simple conversation by phone, text or video call. If appropriate, we will locate the nearest pharmacy and order medication most suited for your circumstance. If you need to go to the hospital or seek other medical attention while away from home, we can advise you on that as well. Members enjoy incredible access to their doctor, no matter where they are.
+ DO YOU PROVIDE WOMEN'S WELLNESS EXAMS?
Sensitive exams such as a Pap screening cannot be provided by house calls, but can be coordinated for you. Women over the age of 21 should typically see a clinician for cervical cancer screening every 3-5 years unless their doctor has determined screening is no longer needed.
Our physicians will use medicines when appropriate to manage disease, but not to override normal healthy bodily functions or when not medically indicated. Rather, through education and appropriate treatment, we will work with you to maximize your health and well-being.
We highly encourage our patients to utilize fertility awareness methods for family planning and direct insights into their hormones, fertility, and related gynecologic conditions such as PCOS. We are pleased to coordinate with instructors of those methods and review your data from fertility awareness apps.
+ DO YOU ADMINISTER VACCINES?
At this time we only administer seasonal flu shots, no other immunizations. Adults and children over 5 can receive most immunizations at their preferred pharmacy or local urgent care clinic, billed through your insurance.
For infants and toddlers, we can prescribe most vaccines to be administered at Grubb's Pharmacy on Capitol Hill. CVS MinuteClinic also vaccinates children.
Free or discounted vaccines are also widely available without a prescription at local health departments. Contact your local health department for details.
Prince George’s County, Maryland
+ WHEN DO I PAY MY FEES FOR NON-COVERED LABS AND PROCEDURES?
Charges will be added and applied to your preferred method of payment on file. If the total is over $100, prepayment is required. Non-members must pay in full before the tests can be done.
MEDICARE & INSURANCE QUESTIONS
+ DO I STILL NEED INSURANCE?
Yes, we recommend that you do have insurance or participate in health sharing group to cover unexpected major medical expenses.
MODERN Mobile Medicine does not replace insurance, and we encourage our patients to carry a high deductible or major medical plan with a health savings account, or join a health sharing group such as Liberty HealthShare, CMF CURO, Samaritan, Medi-share, Solidarity Healthshare, SederaHealth, or Altrua. This ensures financial help should hospitalization or referral to a specialist be necessary. You should consult with an insurance provider (like Hahn Health Insurance or Gravie) to help you find a plan that works best with our medical model and that will meet your specific needs.
Prescription medications may be covered by your insurance or purchased at a discount through programs like GoodRx or BlinkHealth. In some jurisdictions, your MODERN doctor can purchase your prescriptions medications for you at wholesale prices.
+ WHAT IF I WANT TO CONTINUE MY CURRENT INSURANCE? CAN I USE IT?
We do not contract with or bill insurance companies, but MODERN Mobile Medicine will be able to order your labs, x-rays and medications at the facilities preferred by your insurance where your insurance coverage can be applied. Insurance is for expensive, catastrophic care like a hospitalization or car accident; it was never meant for routine medical care that primary care doctors provide.
+ IF I HAVE MEDICARE, CAN I JOIN AS A PATIENT?
Yes, absolutely!
However, we do not bill Medicare, and your monthly membership fee cannot be submitted to Medicare for reimbursement. You must sign a waiver every two years that declares that neither you nor your doctor will directly bill Medicare for your membership fee.
+ CAN I PAY WITH MY HSA OR FSA?
HSA & FSA accounts are a smart way to pay for your health care needs with pre-tax dollars. The healthcare landscape is changing. IRS regulations indicate that primary care services are covered medical expenses reimbursable through HSAs and FSAs. But at the same time, the current IRS commissioner claims that DPC memberships are health plans, and therefore fees are not reimbursable when employees combine DPC with any other “health plan” (like the catastrophic or high deductible insurance most DPC patients need).
While we cannot advise you to use your HSA account to pay for your monthly membership, thousands of patients pay this way in DPC practices across the country, and our billing system will process HSA and FSA payments.
Fee-for-service care is an option for those wanting to use their HSA funds, while avoiding the possible conflict with current IRS interpretation of DPC monthly fees. Paying annually with your HSA is another option, as the IRS has allowed HSA use for prepaid annual medical fees when it includes a yearly physical and other medical services on the end-of-year itemized receipt.
The best thing to do is check with your health plan, insurance broker, or tax professional.
